Has your battery died? There might be a way to save your battery for one last trip, but you’ll need to head to the mechanic straightaway. With jumper cables, you can jump-start most cars and bring your battery to life for a short period of time. All you need is a set of jumper cables and a working car battery to get back on the road.

Both cars should be turned off and parked before attaching jumper cables. With cables in hand, look at your battery. You should note the positive and negative symbols on the terminals of your battery. The positive terminals attach to the red clips on your jumper cables. The negative terminals connect to the black clips. You’ll connect the red clips on both cars, then connect the black clips. After these clips are connected, the working car battery must be turned on to charge up your dead battery. The other driver does not need to rev or “juice” up the battery either. You can simply leave the working car on to let your battery charge for about 10 to 15 minutes.
